The future of mobility in Europe is brimming with green ambitions, with a focus on cleaner vehicles such as electric cars and hydrogen trucks. Recently, EU member states together with the European Parliament agreed on new rules to make this sustainable vision a reality. One notable measure coming out of this is the obligation to install charging stations every 60 kilometres along major European roads. An ambitious move, but there is still much work to be done, as “many countries are lagging behind”.
The EU Deal: A charging station every 60 Kilometres
The new rules focus in particular on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), which consists of roads between major cities, hubs, ports and airports. In this network, which accounts for almost 47,000 kilometres of roads, charging stations must spring up every 60 kilometres. This means that 783 charging stations should eventually appear on the core network alone.
Remote areas are excluded from this. But what does this mean for you as a consumer? More charging stations means more convenience and accessibility, significantly lowering the barrier to choosing an electric car.
The big challenge: How many charging points do we need?
While this measure is promising, question marks remain. Currently, there is a lack of data on the number of charging stations along major roads and their capacity. The European Commission promises new analyses to map this out. Anna Wartberger, spokesperson for the European Commission, acknowledges that many new charging stations need to appear, but the exact number remains unknown for now.
