2G/3G Network Phase-Out

Major changes are coming to Europe’s mobile networks as 2G and 3G reception is phased out. This change could have a direct impact on any Ecotap charger that relies on the 2G or 3G network. The phase-out date for the Netherlands has been set at the end of 2026 for Vodafone and the end of 2027 for KPN. Each country has its own timeline (see this page). It’s important to know when this will happen in your region so you can keep using your charger properly.

Until mid-2022, several types of Ecotap chargers were equipped with a modem that operated on 2G or 3G. With these networks being phased out, it is important to prepare your chargers for continuous use. Ecotap chargers are built to last and with the right upgrades, they can continue to work even after the network is switched off.

Ecotap offers two solutions to help you upgrade your chargers.

  1. Wired upgrade
If a network connection is available, the charger can communicate via a Local Area Network (LAN) instead of a wireless network. This is the cheapest solution, but a LAN connection must be available.
  2. Wireless upgrade
For most charger models, upgrading the controller is the best solution to ensure long-term functionality.

All upgrades should be carried out by trained technicians from Ecotap’s trusted partners. This way, we can guarantee a seamless and reliable transition.

If you are in need of an upgrade, please contact Ecotap Sales Department. They can advise you which solution is best for you.

Ecotap makes every effort to keep customers informed. Depending on your charger type, Ecotap will advise you on the best option to keep your chargers running smoothly.
